women of union research findings
When we started Women of Union, we wanted to create a space where women working in rugby could share their stories, connect with one another, and feel supported in a game we all love. Today, with the publication of our first major research report, we’ve taken an important step towards understanding those stories in greater depth — and what they tell us is powerful.
The data is clear: progress has been made, but it has not been easy. Women in rugby have been breaking ground for decades, often fighting for recognition, resources, and respect. And even now, too many still feel they must work harder than men to succeed. Many are juggling demanding careers with family responsibilities in environments that aren’t always built to support them. Too many find themselves the only woman in the room. And for women of colour, the barriers are even steeper.
But this report is not just about challenges — it’s about hope. Eighty-five percent of the women we spoke to told us they are optimistic about the future. They spoke with pride about the communities they’ve built, the difference they’re making, and the opportunities that rugby has given them. They see possibility, not limits.
That’s why Women of Union exists. To ensure that optimism is matched by action. This research gives us a roadmap: better recruitment pathways, stronger networks of support, investment in leadership development, and a commitment to tackling discrimination wherever it shows up. These are not optional extras — they are the building blocks of a stronger, more inclusive game.
Rugby cannot thrive without women — not on the pitch, not in the boardroom, not in our clubs and communities. The women’s game isn’t just part of rugby’s future. It is the future.
So, to everyone reading this — whether you’re a player, a coach, a leader, or a fan — thank you. Thank you for being part of this journey. Our job now is to keep listening, keep learning, and keep pushing until rugby truly is a sport for all.
